 Die Stadt Tsuruoka, die im westlichen Teil der Präfektur Yamagata am Japanischen Meer liegt, ist seit 2014 die einzige kreative UNESCO Stadt der Gastronomie in Japan und rühmt sich dreier "Japanischer Kulturerbe”: Dewa Sanzans Reise der Wiedergeburt, die Samurai-Seide und die Kitamaebune-Meeresstraße.

Seine 1400 Jahre alten heiligen Gebirge bestehend aus Berg Haguro, Berg Gassan und Berg Haguro, seine schönen Wälder, das Kamo-Aquarium mit seiner Quallenausstellung (die größte weltweit) und seine einzigartige kulinarische Kultur machten es zu einem landesweit hoch angesehenen Ziel in Tohoku.
