Saikan Pilgrim Lodge & Restaurant
Saikan
斎館
This Shintô pilgrim lodge located at the top of Mt. Haguro used to be a temple. Even after its conversion to Shintoism in the 19th century, it continued welcoming travelers and serving the shojin-ryori cuisine. Saikan is a very important place to the Dewa Sanzan, as it hosts many religious activities, especially during the Shoreisai festival at the end of the year. Saikan only accepts reservation by phone (in Japanese). Please remember pilgrim lodges do not offer private amenities but have shared bathrooms and toilets instead. Rooms are usually not lockable.
